Goal Setting for Success

The New Year is around the corner and there is no better time to set some health and fitness goals! Goal setting is a crucial part of achieving success. If you don’t know where you are heading, how will you know how to get there? Sometimes we can get stuck on the ‘how’ part of creating our goals, but once a clear picture of what we want is formed, the ‘how’ falls into place naturally.

STEP 1 Write your goal using the SMART checkist, is your goal...

S – Simple, Specific ?

M – Measureable ?

A – Achievable ?

R – Realistic ?

T – Timed ?

e.g. By Jan 30th 2011 I will weigh 60kg.

By Feb 10th I will run 6km continuously while feeling fit.

STEP 2 Identify HOW you will know you have achieved your goal.

e.g. I have jumped on the scales and I see

the 60kg number!

I have just run my 6km without

stopping and I am breathing really easy.

STEP 3 Form a clear mental picture of this goal being accomplished. Make it as real as possible

STEP 4 Feel the feelings of achieving this goal. How will you feel once you have achieved this goal? Let these feelings fill your body.

STEP 5 Bring this picture and more importantly these feelings to your mind and body every morning before you get out of bed and every evening before you go to sleep. Focus on your goal and let yourself become this person. Go through your day as the healthy person you see in your mind. Be this person. Let this mental picture and these empowered feelings compel you towards doing whatever it takes to achieve this goal. We know that what we put energy into expands; what we sow we reap; so focus on what you want. Keep your thoughts focused on your end result and take action on the opportunities presented to make your goal a realisation. Enjoy the process of taking control of your health and creating the body of your dreams.
